An IMPORTANT NOTE about Mr. Coe's fifth-grade Book Report requirement

The fifth-grade Book Report requirement was introduced to everyone this week.  Students in Mr. Coe's Language Arts classes will need to do 6 Book Reports (or a combination of Book Reports and Accelerated Reader tests*) each trimester during the school year.  Students will complete this project independently, at their own pace.  They will receive regular reminders about this project from Mr. Coe, but they will need to choose books, acquire Book Report forms, and turn in their completed work on their own.

The Book Report form is available in the classroom and as a download.  Just about any grade- and/or reading-level appropriate book is eligible to fulfill the Book Report requirement.  Students may check books out of Mr. Coe's and Mr. Kasch's classroom libraries (if it's in our classroom collections you can be sure it's at- or near-grade level), the school library, the NAU or Flagstaff Public libraries, or read books from home, Bookmans, Barnes and Noble... etc.  There are few limits to what is acceptable in order to complete these assignments... as long as the book is reasonably at or near the student's reading level.  That means for most students Dr. Seuss books, Berenstain Bears books, and myriad other books of this sort will not be considered appropriate.

If an Accelerated Reader (AR) Test is available, students are encouraged to complete an AR Test over any book read for a Book Report. However this is an optional activity; students are not required to take an AR Test.  But I would like them to!  So, as a form of encouragement, anytime students take and pass an AR Test over a Book Report book I will count both scores separately, reducing your need to do additional Book Reports that trimester by one.

ALL FIRST TRIMESTER BOOK REPORTS (and AR TESTS) ARE DUE NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 12, 2010.
